Research and Sources

A transparent home for references, standards, testing documentation, and evidence used across the site

Why This Page Exists

Educational authority depends on separating ranch experience, breed standards, test-provider interpretation, regulations, extension guidance, and peer-reviewed research. This page provides a central location for sources as citations are added and maintained.

Ballard Family Elvis, our Dexter bull, is an important part of our breeding program and our regenerative managment.

Source Hierarchy

Use current laws and agencies for regulatory requirements; registries for breed rules; laboratories and test providers for their own methods; universities and extension services for applied guidance; and peer-reviewed literature for research claims. Ranch observations should be labeled as observations.

Livestock Genetics and Structure

References may support parentage, COI, genetic conditions, carcass traits, tenderness, reproductive anatomy, feet and legs, dairy function, and breed terminology. The applicable species, population, and test scale must remain clear.

Tubby (left) a Chum son, and Moneyshot (right), a Kai son. Both are structurally good as breeding quality boars. Tubby is our retained boar for our breeding program and scored a 7 on tenderness while Moneyshot has not been tested, but has a 25% chance of scoring a 9 on his tenderness test.

Grazing, Soil and Meat Handling

Sources may address forage recovery, stocking, infiltration, ground cover, animal behavior, cold storage, thawing, cooking, and food safety. Local climate and farm conditions affect how general guidance is applied.

Maintaining the Library

Links and standards change. Each cited page should be checked during audits, with obsolete references replaced rather than silently supporting current claims with outdated material. See our glossary and measurement approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every page already have a complete bibliography?

No. This is a living source hub that can expand as page-level citations and standards are audited.

Do sources replace ranch experience?

No. Research and experience answer different questions; both should be labeled and interpreted within their limits.

Why prefer primary sources?

Primary agencies, registries, laboratories, and research papers reduce the risk of repeating an inaccurate secondary summary.

How are broken or outdated links handled?

They should be reviewed during maintenance and replaced with current authoritative references when available.
