Farming Without Routine Herbicides or Pesticides

Managing plants and pests through prevention, grazing, competition, timing, and observation

Our Management Direction

Dos Lobos Ranch works without routine chemical herbicide or pesticide use. That statement describes our normal management approach; it should not be stretched into an unverified certification or a promise that every outside input, neighbor, feed ingredient, or historical land use is chemical-free.

K5 Farm Pua, our Trish sow. Her Igenity Swine tests for tenderness is a perfect score! Genetic testing allows you to look under the hood to make predictions about an outcome. In the case of tenderness, the phenotype outcome cannot be tested until the meat hits the plate. We use genetic testing to breed for better pork for our customers who we would love to keep coming back year after year for more!

Build Plant Competition

Healthy, well-timed forage competition can reduce opportunities for some unwanted plants. Maintaining cover, avoiding chronic overgrazing, encouraging desired species, and allowing recovery are long-term tools rather than instant eradication.

A sow who also scored a perfect score for all of her Igenity Swine tenderness genetics. Unfortunately, a good tenderness score was not enough to keep her around because of her horrible feet and the fact that she had 4 blind teats and couldn't successfully nurse robust litter. She had to go, but man that pork is nice!

Use Animals and Mechanical Tools Carefully

Targeted grazing, browsing, mowing, cutting, hand removal, mulching, and timing can suppress selected plants. Each method has tradeoffs, and disturbance can spread seed or weaken desirable forage when used poorly.

Tubby (left) a Chum son, and Moneyshot (right), a Kai son. Both are structurally good as breeding quality boars. Tubby is our retained boar for our breeding program and scored a 7 on tenderness while Moneyshot has not been tested, but has a 25% chance of scoring a 9 on his tenderness test.

Identify Before Acting

Not every unfamiliar plant is harmful, and some toxic or invasive species require urgent control. Correct identification, life cycle, animal risk, seed timing, soil conditions, and the scale of infestation should guide the response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you claim the ranch is certified organic?

No. We describe our practices without implying a certification that does not apply.

Can weeds be controlled without herbicides?

Many can be suppressed through grazing, competition, mowing, cutting, timing, and removal, though results vary by plant and site.

Are all weeds bad?

No. Some provide forage, cover, or ecological value, while others are toxic, invasive, or highly competitive. Identification matters.

Does avoiding pesticides mean pests disappear?

No. It means management emphasizes prevention, habitat, monitoring, biological balance, sanitation, and targeted non-routine responses.
