Feed Standards & Ingredient Policy

What our pigs, poultry, and cattle eat—and what our feed claims mean

Our Written Feed Standard

Feed claims should be specific enough for a customer to verify. At Dos Lobos Ranch, our standard separates the needs of monogastric animals such as pigs and turkeys from the forage-based needs of cattle, while keeping ingredient choices and exceptions transparent.

Quick answer: Our pork and turkey programs use corn-free, soy-free, flax-free, non-GMO feed; our Dexter beef is grass-fed and grass-finished.

Pork and Turkey Feed

Kunekune pigs and turkeys receive species- and life-stage-appropriate supplemental feed because pasture alone does not reliably provide complete nutrition. Our standard excludes corn, soy, flax, and genetically modified ingredients from their ration. Pasture, forage, clean water, minerals, and seasonal farm resources complement—not replace—a balanced ration.

Grass-Fed and Grass-Finished Beef

Our Dexter cattle are raised on forage and are not grain-finished. Their diet can include growing pasture, stored hay, approved minerals, and other forage-based support needed through North Texas seasons. Grass-finished describes the finishing system; it does not mean cattle eat only fresh green grass every day of the year.

Life Stages, Seasons and Transparency

Young, growing, breeding, lactating, finishing, and recovering animals have different nutritional needs. We adjust amounts and formulations to protect health and body condition. If an ingredient or supply change could materially affect a published claim, it should be documented and communicated rather than hidden behind a vague label.

Use This Standard When You Shop

Compare feed claims by asking for the excluded ingredients, the forage or ration actually used, and how the farm handles seasonal shortages. Continue with our pasture-raised pork guide, grass-finished beef guide, or shop current availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your feed certified organic?

We describe the ingredients and exclusions we can verify rather than implying a certification that does not apply. Ask us for the current ration details when certification status matters to your purchase.

Can Kunekune pigs live on pasture alone?

Pasture is valuable, but pigs generally need balanced supplemental nutrition for reliable growth, reproduction, and health.

Do grass-finished cattle eat hay?

Yes. Hay is preserved forage and is commonly used when fresh pasture is dormant or insufficient.

What happens if a normal ingredient is unavailable?

Animal welfare comes first. Any material substitution should be evaluated carefully and communicated if it changes a published feed claim.
