Livestock Genetic Testing and Records

How we use pedigrees, DNA, health history, and performance records without overstating what they prove

Records Support Better Decisions

Identity, pedigree, parentage, genetic tests, health history, reproduction, structure, and performance records answer different questions. No single document establishes the complete value or suitability of a breeding animal.

K5 Farm Pua, our Trish sow.

Registration and Pedigree

Registration records identity and ancestry under a registry’s rules. Pedigrees help track relationships and plan matings, but they do not guarantee sound structure, fertility, temperament, health, or performance.

Ballard Family Elvis, our Dexter bull.

DNA and Trait Testing

Tests may address parentage, inherited conditions, color, horn status, milk traits, carcass merit, tenderness, or other defined markers. Interpretation depends on the test, species, validation, scale, and animal tested.

Dill's FF Fallen Angel, one of our Nigerian Dwarf does.

Health and Performance Records

Treatment history, testing dates, kidding or calving, litter size, milk or growth information, udder or teat function, temperament, and structural observations can be as important as DNA results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does registration prove breeding quality?

No. It documents pedigree under registry rules; breeding quality also requires function, health, fertility, temperament, and performance.

Can DNA predict everything about an animal?

No. Tests address defined markers or traits, while environment, management, interacting genes, structure, and health also matter.

Are all animals tested the same way?

No. Testing varies by species, age, purpose, bloodline, risk, and sale status.

Can buyers see the records?

Available documentation for a listed animal may be reviewed before purchase; ask exactly what accompanies the sale.
