Did We Really Add $10,000 Worth of Fertility to Our Soil?
One of the most common questions we hear about regenerative agriculture is:
"Does any of this actually pay off?"
It's a fair question.
Over the past three and a half years, we've invested countless hours into rotational grazing, cover crops, compost tea applications, bale grazing, dung beetle habitat, and improving pasture management on our small North Texas ranch.
The results have been obvious in some ways.
We've seen:
- More grass.
- More livestock supported on the same acreage.
- Shorter hay feeding seasons.
- Softer soils.
- Strong dung beetle populations.
- Better water infiltration.
But could those changes actually be measured in dollars?
We decided to find out.
Estimating Our Starting Point
When we purchased the property, the land had previously been managed primarily as horse pasture and hay production.
Based on soil observations, forage production, and comparison with nearby properties, we estimate our soil organic matter was likely around 2% on average.
Today, after three and a half years of regenerative management, visual soil assessments suggest portions of the ranch may now be approaching 4% soil organic matter, with weaker areas still lower and stronger areas potentially higher.
For this exercise, let's assume our ranch average has increased from 2% to 3.5%.
That represents a gain of approximately:
1.5% soil organic matter.
What Is 1.5% Soil Organic Matter Worth?
According to commonly used agronomic estimates, every 1% increase in soil organic matter contains approximately:
- 1,000 pounds of nitrogen
- 100 pounds of phosphorus
- 100 pounds of potassium
- 100 pounds of sulfur
Using current fertilizer replacement values, each 1% increase in soil organic matter represents roughly:
$800-$1,000 per acre of stored fertility.
Our productive grazing area is approximately 7.5 acres.
If our soil organic matter has increased by 1.5%, then our ranch has potentially added:
$9,000-$12,000 worth of nutrient capital.
Not fertilizer applied this year.
Not fertilizer purchased from a supplier.
Fertility stored in the soil itself.
The Water Value Is Even More Interesting
Soil organic matter doesn't just store nutrients.
It stores water.
A common estimate suggests each 1% increase in soil organic matter can hold approximately:
20,000 additional gallons of water per acre.
A 1.5% increase across our 7.5 productive acres equals:
225,000 gallons of additional water-holding capacity.
To put that into perspective, that's enough water to fill more than 5,000 stock tanks.
On a North Texas ranch where drought is a regular part of life, that may be more valuable than the nutrients.
More Grass, More Animals, More Production
When we purchased the property, the carrying capacity was significantly lower than it is today.
Since implementing regenerative practices, we've increased livestock numbers while simultaneously improving pasture performance.
That's not supposed to happen on paper.
Conventional thinking says more animals should require more purchased inputs.
Instead, we've seen the opposite.
By improving soil health, we've increased the land's ability to support livestock.
The Dung Beetle Dividend
One of the most exciting changes has been the explosion in dung beetle activity.
Today, manure often disappears within 24 hours.
Those beetles are performing work that would otherwise require machinery, fuel, labor, or purchased fertility.
They're burying nutrients, reducing parasite pressure, and helping cycle organic matter back into the soil.
For free.
The Real Return on Investment
The most valuable thing we've learned is that soil-building practices shouldn't be viewed as expenses.
They're investments.
A bag of fertilizer is consumed.
A healthier soil profile continues producing value year after year.
A cover crop may cost money today, but improved water retention, nutrient cycling, and forage production can continue paying dividends long after the seed has decomposed.
The same is true for rotational grazing, bale grazing, compost applications, and biological amendments.
So Did We Really Add $10,000 Worth of Fertility?
Maybe.
The exact number doesn't matter as much as the principle.
The real lesson is this:
Healthy soil is an asset.
Every improvement in soil health increases the productive capacity of the ranch.
More water.
More nutrients.
More forage.
More resilience.
More food.
And unlike most assets, this one grows quietly beneath our feet.
