Dexter Cattle Structure Guide

How functional conformation supports grazing, reproduction, longevity, and beef production

Why Structure Matters

Structure is the physical framework that allows cattle to travel, graze, breed, calve, nurse, and remain productive. A show-ring outline or attractive photograph cannot substitute for observing movement, feet, joints, body capacity, reproductive anatomy, and long-term performance.

Connect conformation to breeding-stock selection, herd goals, mature animals, and whole-breed education.

Dexter Height

Dos Lobos Ranch is a member of the American Dexter Cattle Association (ADCA).  Dexter cattle height can be achieved through selective breeding, keeping the animals a desirable moderate to short, beefy framed animal.  Please refer to the ADCA standards for the height ranges that are acceptable for Dexters.  We aim to keep our Dexters somewhere in the comfortable middle on the hip-height scale.

Feet, Legs and Movement

Look for even, durable claws; appropriate hoof angle; stable pasterns; and joints that track without excessive rotation, stiffness, or interference. Cattle should move freely enough to cover pasture and maintain condition.

Topline, Body and Capacity

A useful Dexter should combine balance, depth, spring of rib, heart-girth capacity, and adequate length without losing strength through the loin. Structure must be interpreted with age, sex, pregnancy status, body condition, and production purpose.

Dos Lobos Ranch Minnie Pearl. This girl has an enormous spring of rib, a gift from her dam, Fauna. Minnie lacks balance in the rear, but isn't terrible. She pinches up a tad in the flank as well. Though we're not into showing cattle, we can pick out the flaws that would smack an animal down in the show ring. But what judges like in the show ring and what I like in working cattle on pasture can be completely different things.

Reproductive Structure

Cows need a functional udder, appropriately sized and placed teats, pelvic and maternal capacity, and a history of raising calves. Bulls need sound feet and legs, normal reproductive anatomy, adequate scrotal development, libido, and passing breeding-soundness information when applicable.

The teat placement on a bull matters. The higher the teats are and preferably on the belly, the higher the likelihood of passing strong, structural udders on to daughters. Teats down on the neck of the scrotum would be an indicator of a bull that would have daughters with weak udder structure.

Evaluate the Whole Animal

Study cattle standing and moving on level ground, then compare structure with pedigree, health, disposition, fertility, and production records. See choosing Dexter breeding stock and our breeding program.

Remember, not all cattle are perfect.  Some things should be a major strike against Dexters, temperament being the highest.  An ill-tempered Dexter has a special reservation at freezer camp and is not worth risking injury to yourself just because the animal is "pretty".  There are plenty of good Dexter replacements out there.

When we select cattle, we prefer to use the 80/20 Pareto Principle, given no animal is perfect.  So long as the animal checks 8 out of 10 boxes, it gets put into the observation deck as breeding stock.  Bulls get scored a little harder, closer to 95/5.  There's too many animals kept as bulls that need to be steers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important structural trait?

No single trait overrides the whole animal. Feet, legs, movement, body capacity, reproductive structure, and balance must function together.

Can hoof trimming fix poor structure?

Correct trimming can address overgrowth or imbalance, but it cannot permanently correct inherited joint, limb, or foot structure.

Should cattle be judged from photographs?

Photographs help, but video, movement, hands-on inspection, records, and history provide a more complete evaluation.

Does good structure guarantee fertility?

No. Structure supports function, but fertility also depends on anatomy, health, nutrition, genetics, age, and management.
