Our Dexter Cattle Breeding Program

Selecting registered Dexter cattle for pasture function, maternal ability, beef quality, and long-term usefulness

Our Breeding Objective

Our goal is not to produce cattle that excel on paper in only one trait. We select for a balanced Dexter that can remain sound on pasture, reproduce reliably, raise a calf, maintain a workable disposition, and contribute useful beef traits.

Showing cattle at the 2025 ADCA show was a thrill, though we're not huge into showing. Our bull, Ballard Family Elvis, placing 4th in the Junior Bull class. Elvis is 14 months old here.

Structure and Pasture Function

Feet, legs, movement, topline, body capacity, udder quality, testicular development, and overall balance affect longevity and performance. Structural weaknesses are not excused simply because an animal has an attractive pedigree or a desirable DNA result.

Speaking of DNA...

We are huge fans of using genetic testing for targeted performance improvement.  If it weren't for the tenderness testing especially, we likely would have got out of Dexters after the first ones we slaughtered were horribly tough.  It was after that experience that we started testing instead of relying on breeder hype online that "Dexters have the most tender beef in the world."  Maybe they did consistently at one time, but we're not the only breeders who have noticed that it's being lost.  Our stance is test for it or lose it.  Then once you find it, breed for it.  You'll never end up being disappointed when you need to eat your mistakes.

Fertility, Maternal Ability and Temperament

Calving history, mothering ability, milk appropriate to the cow and environment, rebreeding, calf vigor, and disposition influence retention. Cattle must be manageable without selecting so narrowly for docility that observation and sound handling are neglected.

Genetics, Tenderness and Records

Pedigrees and available genetic tests add information about ancestry and selected traits, including tenderness or carcass merit. Results are considered alongside phenotype and performance because no test predicts the whole animal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all registered calves sold as breeding stock?

No. Registration eligibility does not automatically make an animal breeding quality. Retention and sale decisions consider the whole animal.

What traits do you prioritize?

We prioritize sound structure, fertility, maternal function, workable temperament, pasture adaptation, and useful beef traits.

Do you use genetic testing?

We use available tests when they add relevant information, but never treat a DNA result as a substitute for phenotype and performance.

Can buyers review records?

Available pedigree, testing, and animal-specific records may be requested before purchase.
