Kunekune Pig Cost Guide

Purchase price, long-term ownership costs, and the value behind responsibly raised breeding stock

Preparing for a Kunekune Farrowing

Successful farrowing begins long before the first piglet arrives. Record the breeding date, estimate the due date at roughly 114 days, and prepare a clean, dry, draft-free space where the sow can settle without unnecessary stress.

Quick answer: Watch the sow closely as her udder fills, nesting increases, and behavior changes. Most sound Kunekune sows deliver naturally, but calm observation and a prepared emergency plan protect both sow and litter.

  • Confirm the expected farrowing window from breeding records.
  • Provide deep, clean bedding without loose loops or hazards.
  • Prepare clean towels, gloves, lubricant, iodine, a thermometer, and a safe warming area.
  • Keep veterinary contact information available before labor begins.

K5 Farm Pua, our Trish sow. Her Igenity Swine tests for tenderness is a perfect score! Genetic testing allows you to look under the hood to make predictions about an outcome. In the case of tenderness, the phenotype outcome cannot be tested until the meat hits the plate. We use genetic testing to breed for better pork for our customers who we would love to keep coming back year after year for more!

Genotype Is Not the Complete Phenotype

A genotype is the tested genetic state at a particular marker. Phenotype is the observed result created by many genes plus nutrition, age, sex, health, activity, stress, harvest condition, processing, aging, and cooking.

A favorable marker cannot rescue poor structure, slow development, infertility, excessive fatness, weak muscling, or inconsistent family performance.

A sow who also scored a perfect score for all of her Igenity Swine tenderness genetics. Unfortunately, a good tenderness score was not enough to keep her around because of her horrible feet and the fact that she had 4 blind teats and couldn't successfully nurse robust litter. She had to go, but man that pork is nice!

How Dos Lobos Uses Carcass Information

  • Compare marker results with pedigree and relationship
  • Evaluate body length, loin support, rump, ham, width, and movement
  • Track growth and condition under our pasture and feed system
  • Review siblings, parents, previous litters, and retained offspring
  • Connect live-animal decisions with processed carcass and eating results

Testing adds value because it becomes part of a documented selection system.

Tubby (left) a Chum son, and Moneyshot (right), a Kai son. Both are structurally good as breeding quality boars. Tubby is our retained boar for our breeding program and scored a 7 on tenderness while Moneyshot has not been tested, but has a 25% chance of scoring a 9 on his tenderness test.

Newborn Piglet and Post-Farrowing Care

Clear membranes from each piglet’s nose and mouth, dry chilled piglets, and confirm that every piglet reaches a functional teat and consumes colostrum. Small or slow piglets may need help finding a teat without being separated from the sow longer than necessary.

  • Keep piglets warm while leaving the sow comfortably cool.
  • Check that the sow is calm, drinking, and allowing nursing.
  • Count piglets and examine them for injury, weakness, or congenital problems.
  • Watch for excessive bleeding, fever, poor appetite, foul discharge, mastitis, or failure to pass placental material.
  • Recheck the litter frequently during the first 24 to 48 hours for chilling, starvation, or crushing risk.

Good records—birth order, sex, weight, markings, vigor, teat access, and any assistance—help evaluate future breeding decisions and maternal performance.

Plan Matings, Then Measure the Offspring

Use testing to identify possible strengths, avoid undesirable combinations when evidence supports doing so, and select candidates for further evaluation. Write the expected result before breeding and compare that expectation with the mature litter and pork.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a genetic test guarantee tender Kunekune pork?

No. A marker may inform probability for a specific trait, while many genes, management, processing, cut, and cooking influence tenderness.

Is parentage testing the same as carcass testing?

No. Parentage compares identity and biological relationships; trait tests examine selected variants associated with particular characteristics.

Should breeders select only for favorable test results?

No. Selection must protect structure, fertility, temperament, diversity, health, and whole-herd performance.

Why test if results are not guarantees?

Testing provides additional inherited information that can improve planning when it is verified and combined with accurate performance records.
