Nigerian Dwarf Goats

A practical guide to the small dairy breed for homesteads, breeding programs, and family farms

What Are Nigerian Dwarf Goats?

Nigerian Dwarfs are a small dairy-goat breed known for manageable size, rich milk, varied colors, and lively personalities. Their size makes them approachable, but they still need goat-safe fencing, companionship, dry shelter, balanced nutrition, hoof care, parasite management, and knowledgeable veterinary support.

K5 Farm Pua, our Trish sow. Her Igenity Swine tests for tenderness is a perfect score! Genetic testing allows you to look under the hood to make predictions about an outcome. In the case of tenderness, the phenotype outcome cannot be tested until the meat hits the plate. We use genetic testing to breed for better pork for our customers who we would love to keep coming back year after year for more!

Size, Temperament and Companionship

They are compact livestock, not house pets. Temperament varies by animal, bloodline, handling, health, and environment. Goats are social herd animals and generally should not live alone.

A sow who also scored a perfect score for all of her Igenity Swine tenderness genetics. Unfortunately, a good tenderness score was not enough to keep her around because of her horrible feet and the fact that she had 4 blind teats and couldn't successfully nurse robust litter. She had to go, but man that pork is nice!

Milk and Dairy Potential

Well-selected does can produce useful household milk with relatively high butterfat. Production depends on genetics, age, kidding history, nutrition, health, milking routine, and stage of lactation. An attractive pedigree does not guarantee udder quality or production.

Tubby (left) a Chum son, and Moneyshot (right), a Kai son. Both are structurally good as breeding quality boars. Tubby is our retained boar for our breeding program and scored a 7 on tenderness while Moneyshot has not been tested, but has a 25% chance of scoring a 9 on his tenderness test.

Housing, Fencing and Care

Provide secure fencing, protection from predators and weather, clean water, appropriate forage and minerals, dry resting areas, and a plan for routine observation. Parasite pressure, hoof growth, and body condition require ongoing management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Nigerian Dwarf goats good for beginners?

They can suit prepared beginners, but owners still need secure fencing, companions, nutrition, hoof and parasite plans, and access to goat-knowledgeable care.

Can one goat live alone?

Goats are social animals and generally need compatible goat companionship.

Do all Nigerian Dwarf does produce good milk?

No. Milk volume, udder function, butterfat, persistence, and milking behavior vary by genetics, age, health, nutrition, and management.

Are Nigerian Dwarfs easy to fence?

Their small size and curiosity can challenge weak fencing. Use goat-safe fencing with secure gates and inspect it regularly.
