Why We Avoid Flax in Livestock Feed

The reasoning behind one part of our corn-free, soy-free, flax-free, non-GMO feed standard

Our Flax-Free Feed Standard

Dos Lobos Ranch excludes flax from the supplemental feed used for our pigs and turkeys. This is a ranch sourcing and formulation standard—not a claim that flax is universally harmful or that every other responsible farm must make the same choice.  We have the opportunity to exclude it because our mill excludes it.  The reasoning behind excluding is research supported for health related reasons.

Why Ingredient Specificity Matters

Broad labels such as “natural” or “pasture-raised” do not explain the ration. Naming excluded ingredients lets customers compare farms and decide which production standards align with their preferences.

Why No Flax?

Some consumers report food sensitivities to meats that have been fed a flax seed ration in their diet.  Others are trying to find solutions to health problems by the process of ingredient elimination.  We put this page together because we have had customers call and specifically ask if we feed our animals a ration that contains flax.  Other issues include possible shelf-life being shortened, taste profile changes, and the added expense of the inclusion of flax in the feed.

Another argument against flax is animals don't naturally graze it, so why use it? I'm not sure about that one, but that's what Google says.

Pasture Does Not Replace Balanced Feed

Pigs and turkeys benefit from outdoor access and forage, but they still need balanced species- and life-stage-appropriate nutrition. Removing an ingredient requires a ration that continues to meet energy, protein, amino-acid, mineral, and vitamin needs.

Our pasture-raised turkeys receive a Non-GMO feed, but as of 2026, we no longer have access to an affordable corn/soy/flax free turkey feed option.

Avoiding Unsupported Health Claims

Feed choices can influence production and animal nutrition, but the composition of a finished food depends on the whole ration, genetics, season, management, processing, cut, and sampling. We do not promise a specific human-health outcome from one excluded ingredient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is flax always bad for livestock?

No. We describe our own feed standard and do not claim flax is universally inappropriate for every species, farm, or formulation.

Does flax-free mean pasture-only?

No. Pigs and turkeys receive balanced supplemental feed along with pasture access and forage.

Is your feed certified organic?

We describe the ingredients and exclusions we can verify without implying a certification that does not apply.

Can feed formulas change?

Supply and animal needs can change. Material changes that affect a published claim should be evaluated and communicated.
