Genetic Tests Are Decision Tools

Trait-marker testing can provide useful information about specific inherited variants associated with production or eating-quality traits. Results help breeders plan matings and compare candidates, but they do not describe the entire genome or guarantee a particular carcass.

Quick take: Use the report to ask better questions, then confirm performance through the animal, its relatives, offspring, and actual pork.

In the case of tenderness, the phenotype outcome cannot be tested until the meat hits the plate. We use genetic testing to breed for better pork for our customers who we would love to keep coming back year after year for more!

Genotype Is Not the Complete Phenotype

A genotype is the tested genetic state at a particular marker. Phenotype is the observed result created by many genes plus nutrition, age, sex, health, activity, stress, harvest condition, processing, aging, and cooking.

A favorable marker cannot rescue poor structure, slow development, infertility, excessive fatness, weak muscling, or inconsistent family performance.

A sow who also scored a perfect score for all of her Igenity Swine tenderness genetics. Unfortunately, a good tenderness score was not enough to keep her around because of her horrible feet and the fact that she had 4 blind teats and couldn't successfully nurse robust litter. She had to go, but man that pork is nice!

Plan Matings, Then Measure the Offspring

Use testing to identify possible strengths, avoid undesirable combinations when evidence supports doing so, and select candidates for further evaluation. Write the expected result before breeding and compare that expectation with the mature litter and pork.
