A pig’s body must do much more than create an attractive outline.

The body contains the heart, lungs, digestive system, reproductive organs, and the structural framework needed to support growth, pregnancy, lactation, movement, and forage utilization. Body length, depth, width, and rib shape all influence how much functional capacity a Kunekune has to perform those jobs.

At Dos Lobos Ranch, we look for a body that is moderate, deep, wide, and well supported—not simply the shortest, longest, widest, or fattest pig.

A functional body should provide enough internal capacity to support the pig’s work without becoming structurally excessive or inefficient.

Why Body Length, Depth and Capacity Matter

A productive Kunekune does not make a living standing still. It must walk, graze, digest forage, maintain condition, reproduce, raise piglets, and remain sound as it matures.

A functional body helps provide the space and support needed for:

What Is Body Capacity?

Body capacity describes the internal volume and structural space available within the pig’s body.

It is created by a combination of:

  • Depth through the chest and flank.
  • Width through the ribs and loin.

  • A strong and supportive skeletal framework.

True capacity comes from body structure. It should remain visible even when the pig is in moderate condition.

Capacity is not the same as fatness. A heavily conditioned pig may look large and round while still being narrow, shallow, or structurally limited underneath the fat cover.

Evaluating Body Length

Body length is generally evaluated from the point of the shoulder to the rear of the hip. The goal is not maximum length, but enough length to provide useful capacity while maintaining strength and balance.

A moderately long body can provide additional room for the digestive system, reproductive tract, muscle development, and carcass yield. However, length must be supported by a strong back, loin, legs, and feet.

A well-balanced body should appear:

  • Long enough to provide capacity.
  • Compact enough to remain strong and efficient.
  • Proportional to the pig’s height and frame.

Excessively Short-Bodied Pigs

Excessively Long-Bodied Pigs

Understanding Body Depth

Body depth is the vertical distance from the top of the back to the lower line of the chest and belly.

A deep-bodied pig has substantial internal volume beneath the spine and rib cage. This depth should begin through the heart girth and continue through the middle and rear flank rather than appearing only as a low, heavy belly.

A desirable Kunekune should show:

  • Good depth directly behind the front legs.
  • A full middle rather than a hollow or tucked-up appearance.
  • Depth extending toward the rear flank.
  • A body that appears substantial without dragging close to the ground.
  • A lower body line that is supported rather than loose or pendulous.

Depth must be evaluated together with width and rib shape. A pig can appear deep from the side while remaining narrow and flat-sided when viewed from the front or rear.

Shallow-Bodied Pigs

A shallow-bodied pig lacks vertical capacity between the spine and lower body line.

Common Signs

  • A narrow or compressed chest.
  • Limited depth behind the elbow.
  • A tucked-up flank.
  • A light, refined, or underdeveloped appearance.
  • Insufficient volume for the pig’s length.

Why It Matters

Shallow-bodied pigs may have less digestive and respiratory capacity, less room for pregnancy, and greater difficulty maintaining condition during periods of high nutritional demand.

True Body Depth Versus a Low-Slung Belly

A low belly does not automatically indicate useful body depth.

True depth comes from the skeletal structure of the ribs, chest, and body wall. It should be visible through the heart girth and middle, with the body remaining supported and proportional.

A low or pendulous belly may instead result from:

  • Excess body fat.
  • Loose abdominal support.
  • Age or repeated pregnancies.
  • Heavy digestive fill.
  • Weakness through the lower body wall.
Evaluate the rib cage and heart girth—not just how close the belly hangs to the ground.

Spring of Rib

Spring of rib describes the outward curve of the ribs as they extend away from the spine.

A pig with good rib spring appears rounded and capacious through the middle. The ribs curve outward before turning downward, creating internal room and width through the barrel.

Good rib spring contributes to:

  • Digestive capacity.
  • Heart and lung room.
  • Width through the body.
  • A strong, substantial appearance.
  • The ability to maintain condition on forage.

Rib shape should be evaluated from the front, rear, and above whenever possible. A side photograph alone cannot show how much width and curvature the rib cage actually has.

Flat-Sided or Slab-Sided Pigs

A flat-sided or slab-sided pig lacks outward curvature through the ribs. The body appears narrow and relatively flat when viewed from the front, rear, or above.

Common Signs

  • Little rib expansion away from the spine.
  • A narrow, upright rib cage.
  • Limited width through the middle.
  • A refined or weak-bodied appearance.
  • Less capacity than the side profile suggests.

Why It Matters

Poor rib spring limits functional volume and may reduce digestive capacity, reproductive room, body-condition reserves, and overall substance.

Heart Girth and Front-End Capacity

Heart girth refers to the circumference and capacity of the chest directly behind the front legs.

This area contains the heart and lungs and forms the front portion of the pig’s functional barrel. A pig with good heart girth should appear deep and adequately wide behind the shoulders.

A strong heart girth generally includes:

  • Good depth behind the elbow.
  • Adequate width between the front legs.

A narrow or pinched heart girth may limit respiratory capacity and often accompanies narrow shoulders, poor rib spring, or an overall lack of constitution.

Width Through the Body

A balanced pig should carry useful width through several areas:

  • Chest: Adequate width between the front legs.

  • Sound structure that supports efficient growth to harvest.

How to Evaluate Body Length, Depth and Capacity

1. View the pig naturally from the side.

Evaluate length from shoulder to hip, depth behind the front leg, flank depth, and overall proportion.

2. View the pig from the front.

Look for adequate chest width, fullness through the heart girth, and ribs that expand outward behind the shoulders.

3. View the pig from behind.

Determine whether the body carries useful width through the ribs, loin, and flank.

4. Evaluate the pig from above.

An overhead view can reveal rib spring, loin width, narrowing behind the shoulders, and imbalance between the front and rear body.

5. Feel through the fat cover.

When safe and practical, use your hands to assess rib shape, spine width, loin width, and the amount of fat covering the underlying structure.

6. Watch the pig move.

A large-capacity body must remain supported while walking and turning. Look for weakness, rolling, instability, or excessive strain through the back and legs.

7. Reevaluate as the pig matures.

Young pigs can change substantially. Mature size, pregnancy, lactation, weight gain, and age often reveal strengths or weaknesses not obvious in a piglet.

Do Not Judge Body Capacity From One Photograph

Camera angle, body position, hair coat, pregnancy, digestive fill, and body condition can all change how a pig’s body appears.

A low camera angle may make a pig appear deeper. A side photograph may hide a narrow rib cage. A heavily pregnant sow may appear capacious even if her natural rib structure is limited. A fat pig may look wider than its underlying frame.

Whenever possible, evaluate the pig:

  • From both sides.
  • From the front and rear.
  • From above.
  • Standing naturally.
  • Walking and turning.
  • At a moderate body condition.
  • At more than one age or stage of production.

How Severe Is the Fault?

Body traits exist on a spectrum. A slightly short pig may still have excellent depth, width, and function. A moderately long pig may remain strong and balanced if the loin, back, feet, and legs provide adequate support.

When assessing a potential weakness, consider:

  • Whether the deviation is mild, moderate, or severe.
  • Whether the body remains balanced overall.
  • Whether the pig has true structural capacity beneath its fat cover.
  • Whether the weakness affects movement or condition.
  • Whether mature relatives show the same trait.
  • Whether the weakness becomes worse with age, pregnancy, or weight.
  • Whether the pig’s other strengths are enough to justify breeding it.

Mild imperfections may be manageable in an otherwise exceptional pig. Severe limitations in capacity, support, or balance should weigh heavily against breeding selection.

The purpose of body capacity is not to create the largest-looking pig. It is to support a productive animal throughout its life.

A functional sow should have enough body capacity to graze, carry litters, consume adequate feed, produce milk, recover after weaning, and remain sound through multiple pregnancies.

A functional boar should have enough substance and stamina to maintain condition, travel, breed naturally, and remain structurally capable as he matures.

A functional market hog should have enough length, width, and depth to grow efficiently and produce a useful carcass without requiring an excessive frame or losing structural soundness.



Capacity is valuable when it supports efficiency, reproduction, meat production, movement, and longevity—not when it exists only as excessive size or fat.
