DNA Parentage Confirms Biological Relationships

Parentage testing compares an offspring’s genetic markers with possible sires and dams. When the recorded parents are compatible across the required markers, the test supports the claimed relationship; incompatible markers can exclude an incorrect parent.

Quick take: Parentage testing verifies identity and relationship. It does not grade structure, health, temperament, fertility, or breeding quality.

How Kunekune Samples Are Collected

Hair-root samples are commonly used for parentage testing. Follow the current laboratory and registry instructions exactly: collect the required number of hairs with intact roots, prevent cross-contamination, label every envelope clearly, and maintain accurate animal identifiers.

Do not rely on clipped hair without roots or combine hairs from multiple pigs.

Possible Parents Must Have Profiles

Parentage testing works by comparison. The possible sire and dam need usable profiles in the relevant system or must be tested. When multiple boars or sows could be parents, submit every realistic candidate and disclose the breeding exposure accurately.

A parent may be excluded; a result cannot compare against an animal that was never represented.

What the Report Does—and Does Not—Say

  • Supports or excludes a claimed biological relationship
  • Helps protect pedigree accuracy and registration records
  • Does not prove purity beyond the scope of the registry and marker system
  • Does not test every disease, defect, production trait, or genomic relationship
  • Does not make an unsound pig breeding quality

Use DNA With Accurate Herd Records

Record breeding dates, all exposed sires, litter details, temporary piglet IDs, permanent registered identities, samples, reports, transfers, and corrections. DNA is most valuable when it confirms a disciplined record system.
